Holidays Safaris
A holiday in Kenya is not quite complete without a visit to
the coast.
MOMBASA.
The island if Mombasa is Kenyas second largest metropolis
and the main sea gate to East Africa. It is adequately
connected to up-country centers by road, rail and an
efficient domestic air service.
Mombasa has the harmonious mixture of the ancient and the
modern. The old Town is a fascinating place of antiquity,
characterized by narrow streets and old-fashioned houses.
The 16th century Fort Jesus, a massive fortification built
by the Portuguese, is a major attraction. The old Dhow
Harbour and the Mombasa Marine Reserve are other places of
interest.
A wide variety of social amenities and superb modern
accommodation facilities make Mombasa the most popular
holiday destination for both local and foreign tourists. It
is a paradise for sun and sand lovers Water sports, deep
sea expeditions, out-door activities and indoor
entertainments are available in abundance. The South Coast
resort area, linked by ferry to Mombasa Island, is very

MALINDI AND WATAMU
The most popular spot in Malindi Marine National Park, one
of its kind in Africa The Park lies about 2kms offshore and
is reachable by glass- bottomed boats. The park abounds
with beautiful and diverse marine life. Other places of
interest include the Vasco da Gama Pillar erected in 1498
as a navigational aid and the Malindi crocodile Farm and
Snake Park. A short distance north of Malindi at Mamburi is
large saltpans, which produce salt for both domestic and
export markets. However what draws tourists to this small
town more than anything else is the holiday air that blows
about the place. The tranquility of the township and the
merry atmosphere facilitates complete relaxation.
About 24kms south of Malindi is Watamu Beach holiday resort
with its own marine National Park established for the
preservation of coral reef resources. The coral reefs here
are of exquisite beauty .A short distances from Watamu are
the famous Gedi ruins, one of the principal historical
monuments on the coast. Near the Gedi ruins is the Kipepo
Butterfly Farm where many species of butterfly are
collected for export.
The Lamu archipelago is 30 minutes flight from Malindi.
Access to Lamu Island is only possible by boat. The town is
linked to the mainland and to the three other small islands
of Kiwayu, Manda and Kiunga by waterways. Air travelers
land at the airstrip on the Manda Island and the proceed by
boat to lamu. Lamu is a unique town. It has magnificent old
houses and street that are too narrow and winding to
accommodate motorized transport. Consequently donkeys are
the only mode of transportation!
There is a thriving Swahili culture in Lamu that has defied
the passage of time and architecture that resists change.
You do not need watch here. Nothing happens in a hurry in
Lamu! It is one of the most interesting tourist
destinations anywhere.

Gede Ruins and Kipepeo Butterfly
Tour - 1 Day Tour: Full
day excursion from your hotel or beach resort starting
after breakfast and ending in the afternoon with a lunch
break back to your hotel. Gede Ruins Tour Gede Ruins is a
12th Century Swahili village that was mysteriously
abandoned some 600 years ago due to unknown causes. It is
now a National Museum, and the ruins are heavily overgrown
with beautiful indigenous forest trees, baobabs and
tamarind. Well worth a walk and a visit. Look out for
Syke's Monkeys, and the Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew can
also be seen here. A quiet, careful look in some of the old
wells can turn out the odd owl, too. Kipepeo Butterfly
Project Tour Right at the entrance to Gede Ruins is the
Kipepeo Butterfly Project. This
innovative project is aimed at giving the forest edge
communities opportunities to get an income directly from
the forest, by live breeding the unique butterflies of the
Arabuko-Sokoke forest, and sending them to live butterfly
display centres around the world. The project has led to a
large increase in household incomes in those households
participating in the project, and since butterflies are
short lived and hard to breed abroad, the market is quite
reliable. Recommended to clients staying in Malindi and
Mambrui, full day excursion. Lunch will be at your hotel or
resort on Watamu beach.

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Walking
Tour - 4 Hours:
Four hours excursion from your hotel or beach resort
starting after breakfast and ending by mid day before lunch
at your hotel. This forest covers an area of over 400
square kilometers, it is the last large piece of indigenous

Western Kenya.. It is a key site for the global survival of
six bird species and three mammal species. The
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Guides Association has several expert
guides who can accompany you on your forest walks. They are
expert ornithologists and can help visitors find and see
some of the rare and unique birds of the forest. Over 260
species of birds have been recorded in the forest including
the six globally threatened ones: .Sokoke Scops Owl,
.Sokoke Pipit, .East Coast Akalat, .Spotted Ground Thrush,
.Amani Sunbird and .Clarke's Weaver. Many of these are
found and observed regularly by visitors. For those less
keen on twitching and ornithology the forest is also
lovely for a walk, and exciting too, considering there is a
resident herd of elephant and buffalo!

HELLS KITCHEN MARAFA TOUR - Half Day: Half day excursion (in
the afternoon) taking a leap into the past to see local
ancient carving and tradition to enjoy native culture and
early religious feeling of this part of East Africa. Hell's
Kitchen: Hell's kitchen was originally a sandstone-rich
escarpment, which upon erosion by rains, winds and
torrents, was transformed into a canyon with magnificent
gorges and chimneys, some of them rising up to 30 m high.
Its beautiful colours are best appreciated at sunset. To
reach Hell's Kitchen, the easiest route is to take the
route northward from Malindi. Soon after crossing the
Galana/Sabaki River, the road heads into the town of
Mambrui, from which there is a detour to Marafa. At the end
of Marafa, turn right and 500 m ahead you will arrive at
Hell's Kitchen, called by the natives Nyari, the place
broken by itself. You will be transferred back to your
hotel in the evening
